2009-2010 Dells Powerlifting Coaching Staff

Brian Kenney

Head Powerlifting Coach - 4th season

Brian is a Teacher at Wisconsin Dells HS and has a strong passion for both teaching and coaching.  He has been involved with Dells athletics for 8 years and started the powerlifting team in 2004-2005. Brian loves the students he gets to serve and looks forward to helping them in the weight room and in other areas of their life.  Brian is married to Kelli and they now have a son named Griffin - hopefully a future powerlifter.  Brian also competes in powerlifting and this allows him to stay on top of the sport and offer great role modeling to the students who participate.  Brian officiates Division I, II & III Women's College Basketball in his spare time and likes to conduct team building seminars to different groups to help them achieve full athletic potential.  Brian is the primary advisor for the Wisconsin Dells Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle, another very active extra-curricular group.

Tim Schultz - Assistant Coach - 1st season
Tim is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater where he obtained a degree in Sociology & Criminal Justice and is currently working as a Federal Officer for the Bureau of Prisons in Oxford WI. He has several years of experience in coaching both powerlifting and football, his two favorite sports, for Horicon High School. Tim began powerlifting as a senior in high school when the school began the powerlifting club and continued on to lift for UW-Whitewater's powerlifting club. Tim's number one goal for the year as a coach is to develop every lifter both in and out of the weight room.  We are excited to have Tim helping coach our student athletes.  Tim has a high energy personality that fits in perfectly in our program and kids will gravitate to his intensity in and out of the weight room.

Mike Hess - Assistant Coach - 2nd season

Mike enters his 2nd season coaching with the Dells Powerlifting team and we are glad to have him back again this season.  Mike has a passion for coaching fundamentals in our lifters - proper form and technique.  He also gives the kids positive reinforcement to build their self-confidence.  Mike is married to Jan, with children Andrew, Hannah & Michael.  Mike is glad to be part of this growing and successful sport in the Dells. The sport of powerlifting is made for all who want to be involved.  Mike also has a son who lifts for our team - Michael Hess.  Mike enjoys woodworking, fishing, hunting and spending time with his family in his spare time.

Bryan Cummings - Assistant Coach - 2nd season

(Physical Therapist - New Life Physical Therapy)

Bryan is a wonderful coach to have involved in our program and we are glad to have him back with us for his 2nd season.  Bryan is a full-time physical therapist with New Life Physical Therapy in Baraboo and he is also a Certified Athletic Trainer.  Bryan now runs the Baraboo office and he brings a great background to powerlifting.  We are excited to have him involved in our program.  Bryan has a ton of expertise in the area of bio mechanics and physiology.  He has loads of information to help our student athletes in all areas of strength & conditioning.  Bryan has a masters degree in Physical Therapy and Exercise Physiology.  He is married and has two younger children and in his free time he likes to do outdoor activities and participate in church activities.

Katie Van Dusen - Assistant Coach - 1st season

Katie Van Dusen is currently attending UW Baraboo and plans on transferring to UW Lacrosse. She plans on majoring in Exercise Sports Science and Kinesiology. Powerlifting was introduced to Katie 6 years ago while she attended Necedah. She had no idea what “powerlifting” was at the time, but thought she would give it a go. Katie loves challenges and powerlifting gives her motivation to get in shape, tone up, increase strength and with Katie, the sky is the limit. Katie is a former state, national and world champion. Katie has a resume a mile long when it comes to training in this sport and we are blessed to have her here in the Dells. Katie is going to be a great role model for all of our lifters, in particular our younger female lifters. Katie also has a sister who lifts at Necedah HS named Michelle.

2009-2010 Managers
Good team managers are an extension of the coaching staff and we have two excellent ones this season.  Katie Hovland & Rachel Blynn play crucial roles on our team and they assist with practices, setting up gear for meets, completing stats for the lifters and various other tasks that keep us moving towards our team goals.  They are wonderful to work with and I appreciate all they do to support our team.

Katie Hovland - 8th grader

Rachel Blynn - 11th grader

Special Guest Coach - Griffin Kenney

Griffin is looking forward to helping cheer on the Dells at various meets and will be one of our biggest fans - he is a pretty good lifter as you can see in his picture.

Powerlifting Coaches Goals 2009-2010

Updated - Dec 2009

1- To have at least 18 athletes qualify for state in March 2010 – this year the state meet will be at Seymour HS. Last season we had 14 total athletes qualify for state. I would also like to see us qualify in at least 13 different weight classes boys and girls combined. This helps us with other goals down the list.

2-      To have a 3.0 GPA for our team - we will do a grade check in January 2010 and again in March 2010 just prior to the state meet.

3- To have at least 6 female athletes qualify for the state meet in March 2010.  Last season we had 3 female athletes qualify.  We also want to have at least 4 girls place in the top 4 at state.  Last season we had 2 female lifters on the medal stand at state.

4- To win our Dells regional and to win at least 2 other regionals we attend. We need maximum participation in our Dells home meet. Mark down the date of 1-9-2010 on your calendars.

5- To have each state competitor register a good lift at the state meet – no bottoming out at state. To add to this, we want all athletes to make weight at state in their respective weight classes.

6- To win the Division II state title for the boys.  Last year we ended up taking 2nd place and we have the athletes this season to take home the championship.

7- To have 3 individuals at the state meet win their weight class and become a state champion. Last year we had 2 state champions on the boys side and we can build on this in 2009-2010.

8- To send at least 12 boys and 5 girls to the 2010 National Championships in Wisconsin Dells. We are the meet host this season and we need to showcase our student athletes and our program at this meet.

9- To place in the top 2 for the boys at Nationals - last season we were ranked 2nd in the nation.

10- To have an individual National Champion lifter on our team

11- To have each of our powerlifting athletes set personal bests at each and every meet and get better in their technique and increase strength. We want you to feel good about yourselves and be part of a team that sets high standards.

12- To live up to our slogan on the back of the sweatshirts – we stand for character and to be great we need to make one another great. To have 1 excellent athlete is not enough we need excellence from everyone. You need to be “ALL IN” to be part of this program.
